Chief Executive Election Hong Kong
Background
The 2007 decision of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress that the Chief Executive may be elected by universal suffrage in 2017 represents a critical stage in constitutional development. Although the electoral method has yet to be determined, this decision elevated the importance of the 2012 election in the eyes of both politicians and the general public.
Objective
• To identify the public’s policy expectations of the fourth Chief Executive, the voting criteria, and the level of support for potential candidates
Methodology
Seven territory wide telephone opinion surveys were conducted from April 2011 to March 2012.
Related Publications
Based on the survey data, 16 newspaper articles, one book chapter, one conference paper (presented at the conference on “Election Systems and Democratic Governance in Hong Kong and Macao” held at the Ming Chuan University on 18 June 2012 in Taipei) were published. A book entitled Chief Executive Election: Opinion Polls and Analysis (《問鼎特首:民意調查與分析》) (details here)was also published in November 2013.
